Bono, philanthropist and rock star, has been invited to join the New York Times as a columnist.
The U2 frontman will write between six and ten pieces on Africa and poverty for the paper next year, Andrew Rosenthal, editor of the newspaper’s opinion pages, is reported to have told students at Columbia’s School of Journalism on Wednesday night.
When asked what the Irish millionaire will be paid, Rosenthal’s response was “Nothing”.
A New York Times spokeswoman confirmed: “We have asked Bono to write an occasional column for the paper next year, covering a range of subjects.”
Rosenthal is also said to have hinted at re-recruiting Brian May, the guitarist with Queen who has just earned his doctorate in astrophysics, and to have expressed admiration for Bruce Springsteen, a previous opinion.
